Horse Drawings | Custom Pencil Portraits from Photos
Horses are powerful, expressive, and beautifully proportioned animals. I create custom pencil horse drawings from photographs, carefully drawn to capture both likeness and presence.
Each portrait is hand drawn in pencil using your photos as reference. Whether you would like a detailed head study, a full standing pose, or a dynamic movement drawing, my aim is always to produce a piece of artwork that feels natural, balanced, and true to your horse.
I also draw other animals, which you can see on my Pet Portraits page.
Why Horse Portraits Are So Special
There is something timeless about equine art. The strength of the neck, the intelligence in the eyes, and the elegance of movement all lend themselves beautifully to pencil.
Many people commission a horse portrait to celebrate a much-loved companion, a competition partner, or a horse that has played an important part in their lives. A carefully observed pencil drawing allows these details to be built up gradually, focusing on proportion, tone, and subtle expression.
Whether your horse is a spirited youngster, a seasoned competition horse, or a quiet and loyal friend, a hand drawn portrait creates a lasting tribute.
My Approach to Drawing Horses
I work from photographs that you provide, using pencil to create a realistic and thoughtfully composed horse drawing. Accuracy is important, but so is balance and atmosphere.
When drawing horses, I pay close attention to:
- Head shape and facial expression
- Muscle tone and body proportions
- Mane and tail texture
- Light, shading, and overall composition
Most of my equine portraits are drawn in graphite (black and white), which allows the form and structure of the horse to stand out clearly. If you prefer, I can draw a full body portrait, a head and shoulders study, or include a rider within the composition.
If you would like to see examples of other animals I draw, you can also visit my Pet Portraits page.
Examples of Horse Drawings
Throughout this page you’ll see examples of my pencil horse drawings, including individual head studies, full body portraits, and rider compositions. Each drawing is completed by hand and finished with care, keeping the focus on the horse rather than unnecessary background detail.
